Wanneroo hosts State Bushfire Exercise

Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

The City of Wanneroo Fire Service and Department of Fire and Emergency Services carried out a State Bushfire exercise today (August 21), involving a simulated Level 2 bushfire.

Chief Fire Officer Phil Hay said the DFES training drill occurred annually and this year one of the incidents was in the north coastal region, controlled at the City’s Quinns Rocks Fire Station in Clarkson.

“The idea of the exercise is to test the State’s readiness to any major bushfire that could occur during our summer months,” Mr Hay said.

“We feed the teams scenarios throughout the day of things that could happen, which tests how they would respond with things such as resourcing, communication and community evacuation sessions.”

Wanneroo Deputy Mayor Laura Gray visited the Quinns Rocks Fire Station with CEO Daniel Simms to assess how the local government arrangements would unfold in such an event.

The north coast incident was one of two occurring simultaneously in the metropolitan area, with a Level 3 bushfire in the Perth hills. Regional exercises also took place in Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton and Narrogin.

“Having two metropolitan incidents on the same day adds a significant amount of complexity to the testing of the State’s ability to manage the response effort,” Mr Hay said.

“But it also allows the maximum amount of exposure and practice for personnel involved in a bushfire.”
