Recruitment
Want to make a contribution to your local community? Ever wondered exactly what fire fighters do and how they do it? Become a Volunteer Fire Fighter and find out for yourself!
We are always on the lookout for new members! Below is an overview of the process to join the Brigade. If you have any questions, come along to a Brigade meeting or call the Brigade Captain on 0428 498 779. It might look complicated and long winded, but you’ll be surprised how easily and quickly things progress!
How?
Before joining the Brigade, we require that you attend at least 3 monthly meetings as a ‘visitor’ – primarily this is done to gauge your interest and also let you get to know us a bit first! After your 3 meetings, your basic training will be organised and you will be required to have a medical done (at the City of Wanneroo’s cost) for insurance purposes.
Then What?
After your basic training you will be issued your own Personal Protective Equipment and upon completion of 20 hours of mop-up or controlled burning duties, you will become a fully active member of the brigade.
As an active member, you’ll be rostered with a crew leader to respond to calls in a Light Tanker either over a weekend or on weeknights once every few months. Outside your rostered times you may still respond to fires, but only when crews are required to man our other appliances.
After two years of service and having completed the appropriate training you may be given the opportunity to become a crew leader!
What about insurance?
By law, all Bush Fire Brigade Volunteers are insured by the City of Wanneroo against accident, injury or death. The level of insurance exceeds that available to employees in industry. In some cases, fire fighting can be a stressful pastime – support, counselling and other advice is available to all volunteers via FESA’s Support Services. Regardless of the situation, help is always available!
Important Note!
To become a fully active brigade member you must be at least 18 years of age (or 16 with parental permission). Those people younger may be eligble to join our Cadet Unit – more information is available on the “Cadets” page on this site!
